Vina Santa Carolina – one of the oldest wineries in Chile and previous winner of The Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year, will be hosting an exclusive vertical tasting of their icon wine Luis Pereira for top opinion leaders and writers on 5th September. The tasting will be co-hosted by Head Winemaker Andrés Caballero and Chilean Wines expert Peter Richards MW from 12-2pm followed by lunch at Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social.
After the devastating earthquake that hit Chile in 2010, old documents explaining the vinification techniques used by Santa Carolina in the 1950-60s were found scattered amidst the rubble of the winery’s collapsed buildings while a wine library of old bottles was discovered in a formerly hidden compartment of the underground cellar. These findings laid the foundation for a major rescue project to preserve this valuable heritage.
The event will focus on the two aspects of this exciting heritage project to celebrate 140 years of Santa Carolina’s wine making history:
- A vertical tasting of Santa Carolina’s historic icon wine, Luis Pereira, made from 70-year-old Cabernet vines, which will compare vintages from the 1950s and 60s with wines of the current era including the latest release which Andrés has crafted based on the recipe used in the mid-20th century.
- A presentation of the Bloque Herencia project to rescue the world’s sole unique DNA of pre-phylloxera old vine material that arrived in Chile between colonial times and the 19th century.
“From its early days down to the present, Santa Carolina has played a major role in Chile’s wine history. The heritage and tradition built up in nearly one and a half centuries are the foundation of our wines that convey our essence and origins. We’re proud to be presenting the first results of our Heritage project in the UK and we’re looking forward to receiving feedback from knowledgeable peers in one of the most mature wine markets.” – Santiago Larrain, Managing Director
